Mammals

(chorus)
I have a backbone and I have hair
I’m warm-blooded and I breathe air
I wasn’t hatched, I was born alive
and as a baby, I drank milk to survive
I’m similar to dolphins and kangaroos
I am a mammal and so are you

(verse 1)
We’re the only animals that like to play
Our blood temperature’s internally maintained
I’m a mammal with a four chambered heart
and I like to think that mammals are pretty smart

(verse 2)
We mammals have 2 pairs of limbs
that help us climb, jump, run, and swim
young mammals live on mother’s milk, I’ve learned
“mammal” and “mother” even come from the same word

Amphibians

(chorus)
Salamanders, newts, frogs, and toads
They’re called amphibians in case you didn’t know
They’re vertebrates and may or may not have tails
They’re cold-blooded and they don’t have scales
They live in water and they live on land
herpetologists love - Amphibians

(verse 1)
They’re born in water and hatch from eggs
They’re born with gills to help them breathe
as they grow older they develop lungs
to help them breathe on land
they’re amphibians

(verse 2)
They’re “creatures of 2 lives” these amphibians
They’re born in water but they grow to live on land
in evolutionary theory, it’s believed by some
they’re a link between fish and reptiles
they’re amphibians

Arthropods

(chorus)
Arthropods have exoskeletons
they have segmented body parts and jointed legs, every one
insects and arachnids are just 2 types
there are crustaceans, myriapods, and trilobites
They can live in water, on land, in cold, or hot
most of the world’s animals are arthropods

(verse)
6 legs are common to all insects
but 8 legged spiders and ticks are arachnids
centipedes and millipedes are myriapods
crustaceans live in water and trilobites are all gone

Birds

(chorus)
Let me tell you about the birds, you’ll be
so smart you could teach your friends some ornithology
all birds have feathers, all birds have wings
all species of birds have their own song they sing
they don’t have hair, fins, scales or fur
they’re warm-blooded, feather covered birds
they’re warm-blooded, feather covered birds

(verse 1)
Birds lay eggs that must incubate
to hatch the eggs, the mothers sit on them and wait
some birds can fly, some birds can swim, I’ve learned
but they’re all warm-blooded, feather covered birds

(verse 2)
Birds’ feathers help them keep warm and fly
their feathers are partly hollow inside
birds molt their feathers every year they’re on earth
these warm blooded, feather covered birds

Fish

(chorus)
Fish are cold-blooded animals
they are vertebrates, meaning they have backbones
most have fins and scales and most of them lay eggs
fish use permanent gills to breathe
sometimes they make a tasty dish – they’re fish (fish)

(verse 1)
Fish use fins to balance, move, and steer
on most fish they’re on the top, bottom sides, and rear
fish control their movements going up and down
using an air bladder, ichthyologists have found (fish)

(verse 2)
Fish were the world’s first vertebrates
they live in oceans, seas, rivers, ponds, and lakes
fish have a nervous system and ears inside
they’re dark on the top, light on the bottom
to help them hide (fish)

Insects

(chorus)
What has 3 body parts and 6 legs
what grows up from little bitty eggs
What has antennae and 2 pair of eyes
what do we call these little bitty guys
They’re I-N-S-E-C-T-S  -  Insects

(verse 1)
The head is where antennae are found
along with eyes, simple and compound
the legs and wings are found on the thorax
and they breathe through spiracles in their abdomens

(verse 2)
They grow to be adults through the process
of complete or incomplete metamorphosis
and you can make a living studying them
if you decide to become an entomologist

Reptiles

(chorus)
Reptiles have dry skin, breathe air, and live on land
They’re a link between birds and amphibians
snakes, turtles and lizards, alligators and crocodiles
these are the different kinds of reptiles

(verse 1)
They all have lungs to help them breathe air
they have scales or plates, but no feathers or hair
they can be pets or they can live in the wild
they can be born alive or hatched from eggs
they’re reptiles

(verse 2)
They’re cold-blooded animals, so their body temperature
changes because it’s controlled by the outside weather
the word “reptile” comes from a word that means “to crawl”
but they slither and crawl with style
they’re reptiles

Spiders

(chorus)
Creepy, little spiders are
arachnids with 2 body parts
Creepy, little spiders have
8 legs and an exoskeleton
For their size they’re pretty tough fighters
they are what we call creepy little spiders

(verse 1)
Spiders are poisonous carnivores
they can live outside or indoors
They inject venom to kill their prey
when they bite with those claw-like fangs

(verse 2)
The most dangerous spiders that we know
are the brown recluse and black widow
Most spiders aren’t this dangerous
but every single one is venomous
